Fellowship Of The Ring Running Time:
2 Hrs 58 Minutes
l.o.t.r the fellowship of the ring (2001)
I was sceptical of this film. I had part read the first book as a teenager and had thoroughly enjoyed it before getting frightened off by Tom Bombadil. For those who don’t know Tom is a fool who spouts nonsense poetry which puts people off reading the rest of a wonderful story.
I had also got put off by a piss poor fantasy book by Terry Brooks, I think, called Magic Kingdom For Sale, Sold.
That wasn’t to say I disliked the concept of Fantasy. I played loads of fantasy computer games. I loved both Baldur’s Gate Films on the PC, and will one day get heavily into the 3rd one. Why haven’t I played the 3rd one? It is called getting old, and not having the same amount of energy to play video games as I once did.
Is Peter Jacksons fellow ship of the the rings any good?
The film is a classic and you dont just have to just like fantasy to enjoy it. The start is a bit slow I would grant you. But that is Tolkien; he likes to start with a bit of background, so you get to know the star characters. You have to have a little bit of patience to enjoy the show. The introduction is a party for Bilbo Baggins from the shire, a hobbits town in the book.
Bilbo Baggins was the hero of Tolkien’s first book, The Hobbit, and if you didn’t know this or have not read the book, do not let that put you off. Bilbo quickly moves into the background and the real story starts.
Plot Spoiler and the overall theme of the three movies
Frodo, Bilbo Baggins nephew has to take Bilbo Baggins’ evil cursed ring and destroy it. A gang of noble warriors, the fellowship set out to destroy it and help Frodo on his quest.
The Slow Start To L.O.T.R turns engrossing
If you can handle the slow start, then you are in for a wonderful film. To make a fantasy a good fantasy, there are lots of Swords, facial hair and elves. Within an hour you will be in for a treat as the Fellowship Of The Ring come together to destroy the evil forces that are threatening ‘middle earth’, the world where these fantasy characters live.
What makes this different from many other fantasy novels and computer games is that Jackson gives them proper personalities. You find yourself getting emotionally attached to Gandalf and Aragorn. Ian MacKellen plays a wonderful Gandalf.
Gimli is a gruff dwarf. However, the further he goes with Legolas, the Elven Bow and Arrow specialist, the more their friendship increases. It is the little touches of humanity that made me realise that fantasy films, in the right hands, can be good.
How were the visual effects for the first Middle-earth film achieved?
This topic needs to be discussed in detail and is beyond my knowledge and understanding. Though some of the monsters were a bit shit as CGI in 2026 eyes it did not have the tools it does now, it looks significantally better than a Ray Harryhausen film. Though you can spot CGI it doesnt mean it is bad. It was a watershed moment in the embrace of CGI as the first film to use it to the extent and ambition that we see it now.
However, I will put you in the hands of AI to provide a better response.
Bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth to life for the first Lord of the Rings film, The Fellowship of the Ring, was a monumental task that blended groundbreaking digital effects with traditional filmmaking techniques. Peter Jackson, the director, initially wanted to create Middle-earth “for real,” focusing on photographic construction of the world and using digital methods primarily to seamlessly integrate elements .

Here’s a breakdown of how the visual effects were achieved from AI:
- Conceptualisation and Artistry: Jackson was deeply inspired by the existing artwork of Alan Lee and John Howe, who had designed many book covers and illustrations for Tolkien’s works. He hired both artists as conceptual artists to help visualise Middle-earth, with their pictures even spread out during screenplay writing .

- Weta Digital’s Innovations: The bulk of the visual effects were handled by New Zealand’s Weta Digital, which grew significantly for the project . The film was a pioneer for Weta Digital and the visual effects industry, introducing several “firsts” :

- Massive Software: To create the enormous computer-generated armies needed for monumental battles, Weta Digital developed and utilised their proprietary “Massive” software . This allowed for vast numbers of digital characters to move and interact realistically.

- Virtual Camera: The famous Balin’s Tomb sequence marked the first time a virtual camera was used in a virtual production context .

- Digital Characters and Creatures: The film featured numerous digital characters and fantastical creatures, created with newly developed, cutting-edge software tools. For some computer-generated characters, body movement was captured using special suits, while facial expressions were meticulously hand-animated by artists who studied footage of the actors . Weta Digital’s work involved everything from creature and digital double animation to entirely digital environments . The primary software used for creating characters and scenes included Maya and ZBrush .

- A Blend of Practical and Digital: Despite the advanced CGI, the films also heavily relied on practical effects, scale models, prosthetics, forced perspective, and green screen to make the world feel tangible and create effects like making actors appear smaller . This approach allowed Jackson to avoid the “softness” sometimes associated with purely digital effects .

- Industry Impact: The Lord of the Rings trilogy is considered a significant transition in visual effects, comparable to Jurassic Park, not just in technical advancement but also in how these effects were integrated into storytelling . The first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and a BAFTA for Achievement in Special Visual Effects . Many believe the trilogy was made at a “perfect time” in CGI technology, allowing for its remarkable realism and enduring appeal .

What the AI mentions that I forgot was that it uses CGI but does not use it for the sake of it. Many film-makers do not keep to this balance. Marvel films, I am talking to you. If you can integrate the practical into the story as much as possible then it makes it much more appealing.
Yes, the Orc fights are good. But it does not overdo it. I may be 53 but when a superfight happens a bit of human contact and emotion does make things more relatable.
This is just me though
Rating 10/10
I will review the other 2 shortly
