The Gilmore Girls daughter intelligent Rory And Lorelai, sharp talking single parent mother provide a cosy autumnal drama which captivated me for the whole of Gilmore Girls Season One, but will I get hardcore and watch them all, seasons?
I think I will probably go back, maybe next autumn, and move from a whole on from Gilmore Girls Season One to the Gilmore Girls second season, which I will dutifully review. However, I may dip into the second season from time to time before the Autumn, which may turn into a binge, who knows.
The drama has 7 separate ‘communities’, which makes it watchable. First, there is Lorelai’s workplace. She is the manager of the Independence Inn, with ambitions to start an Inn of her own, and as time goes on, you get to know all the separate characters within there.
Secondly, there is Rory’s school, Chilton School. Chilton School is a high-achieving school to which Rory, the younger Gilmore, has been fortunate enough to receive a scholarship. We, the viewers, see Rory’s ups and downs
Thirdly, Lorelai cannot afford to pay Rory’s school fees. Therefore, she has to, as a last resort, approach her wealthy but estranged parents, whom she ran away from after getting pregnant with Rory at the age of 16. The only condition that her wealthy parents will pay for Rory’s fees is if they come for supper every Friday night. Rory quite likes this as she gains some new grandparents, but Lorelai is not so keen.
The other community is Stars Hollow. This is the town that they both live in, and it is very eccentric. It is small, and everybody knows everybody else. For example, when one of their neighbour’s cats died, the whole town came together for the wake. It is one of my favourite episodes of the shows that I have watched.
Finally, there is Rory and Lorelai together. They have a lovely bond that’s part of the show and makes it worth it. They both parent each other in different ways. However, Rory is only 15 in the series I watched. Though Lorelai may be a sleepy teenager in some ways, it is definitely Lorelai who manages and advises Rory in the outside world.
All these various communities cross with each other. For example, Lorelai gets romantically involved with one of Rory’s teachers. Another example is that Suki, the chef at Lorelais hotel and her best friend, brings Bangles tickets to Rory’s house, and they are donated to the Chilton House study group to help Rory bond with new potential friends.
One more part of the series is coffee. Coffee is the bond that makes Rory and Lorelai function, especially the latter. If they are not at the house, then they are at Luke’s Diner. Luke is slightly crabby but likeable and is always there to lend a hand.
Both Rory and Lorelai have their love interests. Lorelai’s are Max, Rory’s teacher, and Rory’s is mainly Dean, a pupil at Stars Hollow High School. These do change from time to time, and it would be boring if they stayed the same and smooth all the so no love affair is smooth and straightforward. Watch the Gilmore Girls Season One if you want something to put your slippers on too.
