It is on NetFlix, it is new*, when I saw it so I decided to give it a quick view.
What is it about?
Ada Harris is a working class war widow in 50s London and she goes to Paris to buy an expensive designer dress. It will cost, around £500, which even in today’s terms is a lot of money. Imagine what it would be like in the 1950’s.
What made this war widow want a posh dress?
She is a cleaner, and she saw one of her clients had a very classy dress that she fell in love with. Ada had to have an expensive dress of her own, and she would do it by hook or by crook and by honest means, of course.
What happens next?
She goes to Paris despite the ‘your mad Ada’ warnings from all her friends. What happens next will require you to watch the film.
What did I think of it?
It was alright. Ada was likeable and there was a desire from me to end the film despite it not being a genre that I would normally go for.
One of its faults was that there was no suspense. If there was a crisis moment, then Ada would rescue it with some homespun advice, or it would sort itself out.
Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is debatable. It wasn’t supposed to grip you. It was designed to make you feel better. If it was a food it would be marmalade on toast. It is satisfying, unmistakably English, and to be worn with slippers, preferably by the fire.
*I do appreciate that it was released in 2022 so in terms of its existence it has been around for ages.
