Sorry if I am a bit late reviewing this, it has been on since 2005; I only found it a day or two ago on Disney+. I reviewed it on the recommendation of Rosie Ramsey of Shagged, Married Annoyed podcast fame.

I appreciate that it has been around for about 20 seasons or so. Like the Greys virgin, I am. I will write a short review, wondering what will happen in the following 20 seasons.

However, I will tell those who have not watched it that they should.

What is it about?

The main character is junior Doctor Dr Meredith Grey, and where I am at the moment, she is an intern at the bottom of the ladder in terms of Hospital Doctors hierarchy.

As an Englishman, I like this show because it shows that hospital dramas don’t have to be like Casualty or its spin-off, Holby, in the UK. I have watched bits of both hospital dramas in the UK, and they turned me off the whole concept. Greys, which did not take itself so seriously, is superior and surprisingly enjoyable.

Admittedly, I didn’t watch enough Holby, but Grays didn’t have ridiculous ‘adrenaline scenes’ where everyone was incredibly serious and hushed spitting out ‘medi-speak’

My problem with Casualty and Holby, the British alternative, was the seriousness and reverence that these medical staff were talking about during the procedures. Greys doesn’t do that. When they do surgery, the staff are focused and ‘medi speak’, but it is not over the top. Their personalities also affect their ability to do their job. They are surgeons, but not gods. They are real people in real jobs, and I like that.

Meredith, including the rest of the interns and indeed the rest of the staff, have hormones, so we see romantic lives occurring. Indeed, in the first episode, Meredith finds out that the man she had a one-night stand with is her boss.

Finally, it is probably more of a woman’s show than a man’s. I watched it under duress as I couldn’t find anything to watch. Men, do not let that put you off. It is a good drama. I do not have the energy to watch all 25 seasons, so it is not all that good. However, give it a go if you want something good to watch that you can dip into. You will be satisfied. The staff are human beings and not ‘gods’, which is what the doctors are, and that is what makes Greys brilliant.
