Who Is Gabby Petito?
Gabby Petito was a lovely American woman from the East Coast who made friends easily. However, she started a relationship with Brian Laudrie, a possessive man who would eventually kill her.
This began as a story about a missing person, which morphed into a domestic murder story. It was so big that it even reached across the Atlantic to the UK. This is demonstrating how big it was at the time.
As soon as I saw the first minute or 2 on Netflix, I thought to myself, oh, I know. I remember this.
In a journalistic frame, the fact that it was seen as a lovely young couple crossing America in a van together is a romantic concept. It provides the kind of human interest that cannot be beaten.
Also, her doing a Vlog documenting their journey is ‘wholesome young people’ gold.
Brian, Gabby’s boyfriend and killer, did not have a chance of getting away with it. The publicity it generated was always going to catch him within an ever-tightening noose day by day. Also, the emergence of cell phone technology was not on his side.
It was if, not when, he was going to be caught.
Looking back at Gabby, she was a young, beautiful, free spirit whose personality caught the nation’s attention. It prompted the police to take strong action; It was almost inevitable that the body would be found. The publicity generated by the case ensured that Brian would face a long time in Jail.
Except that he didn’t.
Even with Wyoming’s big, wide rusticity, he could not contain the feedback of his actions. Their movements were shrunken day by day until the body of Gabby was found. It was a sad end to a tragic tale.
Brian committed suicide, and so the conclusion in a kind of crime/punishment angle was a damp squib. He was not going to Jail, and he did not face trial.
However, good things have come from Gabby’s death. Many people have benefited individually in her name and escaped abusive relationships. That is what I like to think about when watching this documentary.
Maybe someone who has watched this documentary has been inspired and said, ‘Am I a victim of domestic abuse? If so, what do I do? Many good issues were raised at the end.
