The world of Podcasts can be listened to on Spotify, Apple Music, and many other platforms. From Chris And Rosie Ramsey in Shagged Married Annoyed to Richard Osmond and Marina Hyde in The Rest Is Entertainment

You have heard all these annoying London Media plonkers bores talking about or plugging their podcasts. For those who do not know what they are and want to know, I will start from the beginning.

Podcasts as a medium have been around forever, well 2003. At first, they just talked about things that wouldn’t appeal to the masses. For example, plant growing, C++ functions, and mainly academic material.

Indeed, the first Podcast was about the Open Source community. Google ‘Open Source’ and you will see what I mean.

However, though they had been steadily steering into the mainstream, Lockdown was the catalyst that boosted their popularity from a stage manager of entertainment to a mainstream star of the show.

During lockdown, podcasting became huge. This was because people were locked inside their houses with nothing to do. The creatives built podcasts, and the masses were entertained. A win/win situation

What is a Podcast?

A podcast is simply like a radio show. You hear a conversation among 2 to 3 people about something. In the olden days, you would get that on Radio 4 or maybe 5 Live. They can be found everywhere on the Internet, but I choose Spotify. Apple folk often choose their own channel.

Where Do I Start To Explore?

Look at the UK podcast charts. That is how I found more to listen to, as well as Shagged Married Annoyed. I found many listens, for example, Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart on ‘The Rest Is Politics’ and sometimes The-Overlap/Stick-To-Football gang, a superior Football one and many others.

Also, the more you listen to podcasts, the more your Spotify Algorithm will introduce you to stuff that is to your taste. If you don’t like it, then you can skip it.

Two Famous Brands From The World Of Podcasts

Goal Hanger, home of The Rest Is series

The Goalhanger brand is worth exploring. It was until very recently Gary Lineker part owned. All their podcasts start with ‘The Rest Is’. They have a massive diversity of British stuff.

Joe Rogan, sometimes slightly dodgy but if the guest is right it can be good

I do listen to many podcasts from around the world, even Joe Rogan if I am feeling cheekily right-wing, though not too often.

I will admit to being a bit of a leftie, but Joe is entertaining, when he is not hosting dodgy politicians, whatever your leaning.

If you have money to throw around, then you can become a Patreon member of many a Podcast and receive extra content that the oiks, like me, can’t get because we are too stingy.

I want to listen to Chris And Rosie Ramsey.

Podcasts are great, they are like an entertaining friend. However you can basically treat them like shit. The sheer amount of choice and back episodes makes each podcast ‘infinite’. Let’s take the example of my first pod, Shagged Married Annoyed starring Podcast Royalty Chris And Rosie Ramsey.

Chris And Rosie are sitting by my bed, talking to me, entertaining me, and making me laugh.

If I then lose concentration and fall asleep it is not the end of the world. Do they give a shit? Of course they don’t they will have got paid. They don’t know personally, but they are still being polite and Spotify will still continue to play the episode.

The World of Podcasts is part of my life, and I suggest they become part of yours, too. The podcast is here; it is here to stay.

Finally as an aside each episode is like a piece of bubblegum, it rarely matters if you miss a bit as it is a throwaway piece of entertainment, there is always the next episode to listen too.

It is not like the audiobook, where you have to be committed to it. If you fall asleep then you have to back track and find the bit that you fell asleep at. That is inconvenient.

Chris and Rosie have produced more than up to 400 times of their main episodes. To listen to them all would take some hard core listening. So one episode does not matter to either of us.

Most other podcasts have huge backlogs too.
