What is this all about?

This review is all about the evil Pennywise the Evil clown from the film ‘IT’. Pennywise the clown first appeared in Stephen King’s novel, IT.

The Modern Pennywise the evil clown

The movie was released in 2017 and features Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. This is not to be confused with the made-for-TV version in the early 90s where Tim Curry played Pennywise.

Finally, some new Pennywise content is available in ‘Welcome to Derry’ on Netflix, making this review timely.

Finally, though Halloween has been and gone, it was only a stone’s throw away, so I wanted to review a horror film. Personally, I found this film ‘IT’ on Sky Movies.

Modern Horror For Modern Audiences

This was made in 2017. Far enough away from the late 80s, when I was a teenager, where I would have to endure shit horror films. At the time, I preferred a shit National Lampoon College style, where I would see a breast or two in the name of ‘comedy’. Still salad days with my mates who were too shy to go to the pub. So was I of course.

Why Do I Like Horror Now?

I heard that horror films were more sophisticated these days, but I never got around to sitting down and watching one. Then I saw a half-hour show on Channel 4 that featured 6 short of horror from different horror directors. It was wonderful. All my prejudices about teenagers getting butchered in one-dimensional ways had gone.  Things had moved on since the 80s.

Horror was better. Not corny, ‘real’ convincing people experiencing horrible things. Not teenage college students or High School kids getting butchered.  I am a convert. I had always meant to watch ‘IT’ as it was supposed to be good, and now I have.

If you aren’t familiar with Pennywise the evil Clown SPOILERS

PennyWise The Evil Clown
PennyWise The Evil Clown

Pennywise is a shapeshifter who comes to a small town in New Hampshire every 25 to 30ish years. He prefers to take the guise of a circus clown who likes to kill children/teenagers, and they are the only ones who see him.

Though the film centres around older children/young teenagers, don’t let that put you off. They are well directed and can act. I admit my heart sank when I saw that its heroes were not adults and kids riding around on their bikes.

Afterwards, Pennywise goes to Derry, brushes it under the carpet, and pretends that nothing has happened.

SPOILERS END.

Blood and Gore and all that kind of stuff

The film IT does contain some blood and gore. However, somehow the director ensures that ‘it is not just for the sake of it’. It is genuinely vital. Whereas the Wes Craven films, such as Nightmare on Elm Street, were more exaggerated and unnecessary.   This is a good direction by Andy Muschietti, the director of ‘IT’.

Will I watch more Pennywise the evil clown?

The Losers Club
The Loser Club who take on Pennywise

On top of my Netflix pile is ‘Welcome to Derry’, a prequel to the films, so yes. Will I 0watch more horror?  IT and Channel 4’s horror show has shown me that ‘They don’t have to be shit’ as they were in the 80s.

Did it scare me?

Scared

Well? As it is a horror film, there are no rules. So you wonder whether any of the heroes are going to die when they fight Pennywise. That is the fun of horror films.  Nothing is safe.

Will I Watch More Horror Films?

The Mummy

Most definitely
